What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant consists of a small piece of metal which is surgically implanted in the jawbone, essentially forming a replacement for the root of a tooth. As the tissue heals over the next two to six months, the bone around the implant fuses to the implant, creating a perfectly stable structure.

After the patient has healed, Dr. Shubin uses the implant to anchor crowns, bridges, or dentures - recreating your perfect smile.

Want a more natural-looking and more comfortable cosmetic dentistry solution to missing teeth than removable dentures? Dr. Nicholas Shubin of San Juan Capistrano offers dental implants, which are permanently anchored into the jawbone and make for better chewing and a more natural smile.

We're not kidding when we say that dental implants are the most natural-looking way to replace missing teeth. The jawbone actually forms a chemical and mechanical bond with the implant and grows right into the implanted device! However, only patients with healthy oral tissues and mostly in-tact jawbones are eligible for dental implants. If you aren't a candidate for dental implants, Dr. Shubin will tell you how else he can transform your smile!

About Dental Implants

What is the implant process like?

At Nicholas Shubin DDS in San Juan Capistrano, our dedicated staff begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical and dental history, and Dr. Shubin conducts a full exam of the mouth and area surrounding the missing tooth, including x-rays. Once the exam is complete, Dr. Shubin talks with the patient and makes recommendations for a comprehensive treatment plan. After answering questions and receiving input from the patient, the process begins as implants are surgically placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia.

The amount of healing time is different for each patient and depends on variables such as the quality and quantity of bone, as well as the type of implant placed. When Dr. Shubin determines that the patient has healed adequately, he will use the implant to support a crown, bridge, or denture—completing the process.

Are there different types of dental implants?

The American Dental Association accepts two types of dental implants: the endosteal and the subperiosteal. Most dental implants placed today are endosteal root form fixtures (similar to a man-made tooth root), though Dr. Shubin will assess your unique needs. One factor that he will take into consideration in selecting the right type for you is whether your jawbone can adequately support the implant. This can be determined through an exam.

How many dental implants will I need?

Dental implants are ideal for patients who need one or more teeth replaced, but the exact number of implants will be determined by Dr. Shubin during the initial exam and included in the treatment plan. Typically, however, one implant is placed for each tooth that will be replaced.

Some of the factors that go into the decision about the number of implants include the quality and quantity of the patient’s bone and the existing anatomy of the bone. Financial considerations are also a factor for some patients. But because we believe that all of our patients in the San Juan Capistrano area should have the smile they’ve dreamed of, at Nicholas Shubin DDS, we’re committed to offering payment plans that work with your budget.

Our goal at Nicholas Shubin DDS is a completely successful procedure, which includes placing enough implants to secure the restorations needed for a healthy, whole smile. It’s a waste of time and money to have an implant fail due to an inadequate number of implants being placed to support the teeth.

Over time teeth can be destroyed by decay, disease, injury, or grinding. A modern tooth implant can provide a permanent solution to these unsightly and uncomfortable problems, but it's not necessarily the right choice for everyone.

You must have good jawbone ridges and healthy oral tissues because the implant is actually inserted into your jaw. A chemical and mechanical bond is formed as the jawbone actually grows into the implant.

Don't let your worries about the cost of dental implants stop you from considering this beautiful, permanent, natural-looking solution to your missing, damaged or diseased teeth.

Our friendly staff at Nicholas Shubin DDS can show you a range of affordable financial options to fit your budget.

Having a healthy strong jawbone and healthy gums make you a great candidate for a tooth implant. During the procedure, the dentist inserts a metal anchor into the jawbone. The two fuse together to form a permanent bond. Later, an artificial tooth or crown is attached, leaving your smile looking 100% natural.
